Hi, all.

A few things have happened since my last update. Let me summarize them for you here:

500mm f/8 Mirror Lens

For the first time in my life, the Minolta 500mm f/8 mirror lens (sometimes called a “reflex” lens – it uses mirrors instead of conventional optics like a telescope; resulting in a very small and light lens with a long reach) can do something it’s never been able to do before. Because its fixed f/stop is so small, earlier cameras would switch to a fixed, center focusing point whenever the lens was attached. This was because, historically, the center focusing point was more sensitive and sometimes was made as a “cross-point” sensor, able to recognize both vertical and horizontal contrast.

Anyway, on the Monster Adapter it works just like any other lens – your focus point can be anywhere the camera allows, eye AF and tracking are both enabled! The focusing speed is a little slower than when used with an A99 II (my reference camera in handling tests), but it’s not bad.

Here’s a quick test video I threw together to demonstrate: https://youtu.be/Qrt9PesBkR0 This has 3 tests; the first showing off Eye AF, the 2nd showing the lens on an A99 II for reference, and the 3rd showing a similar test on an A7R IV.

As with the other lenses, just don’t try to shoot sports with this setup.

A7R IV Firmware Update

Last week Sony came out with a firmware update for the A7R IV, and I was told not to do the update, as it broke the functionality of the Monster adapter. So the bad news is this thing is vulnerable to external firmware updates. The good news is it was discovered and fixed within the week – I don’t know of any manufacturer that fixes bugs that quickly. 

Additional FAQs (over and above the ones already published in previous updates)

Q: Will this adapter make my lenses focus faster than the LA-EA4?
A: Probably not.. The goal is to add new intelligent focusing modes that you can’t get with the LA-EA4. Do not expect increased speed to be the primary benefit.
Q: Will you be able to easily reinstall or remove the AF mirror in case you wanted to use other lenses not on the list - in current LA-EA4 mode?
A: You can restore the mirror if you want to, but if you want to go back to the old functionality, you’ll have to restore the original circuit board.
Q: Will this adapted LA-EA4 likely to have better performance with SSM lens than the LA-EA3 - once the firmware is developed? Or will it just operate pretty much the same - no Eye AF or slower foculsing speed, for instance.
A: Don’t know; and right now it’s a moot question since the developer decided to prioritize adding lenses over adding support for SSM and SAM lenses. Maybe one day, but right now I’d say it’s best not to expect that support should you decide to get this.

Still not sure if I’m going to take this on. I’m hoping to get firmware version 0.2 next week, and I’ll put it through its paces once again. And of course I’ll keep you informed of progress.

Klingt danach, als ob wir die Platinen bereits mit Firmware v02 bekommen und dass es dem Entwickler gelungen ist, das Problem mit dem A7RIV Firmware-Update v1.20 mit der Platinen-Firmware v02 zu lösen! Das klingt schon mal sehr gut!
Alles andere ist bekannt bzw. wurde von mir so erwartet! Gut, dass das 16F2.8 Fisheye nun doch (noch) nicht bei den unterstützten Objektiven dabei ist, scheint mir akzeptabel. Ich bleibe trotzdem bei meiner Bestellung von zwei Platinen.

Wenn unsere Platinen noch von der ersten Charge stammen sollten, wovon ich ausgehe, dann wird da noch v01 drauf sein. Falls die erste Charge schon ausverkauft sein sollte und wir von einer späteren Charge bedient werden, dann könnte schon die v02 aufgespielt sein. Aber ich denke nicht, daß die bei Taobao gelagerten Platinen die v02 aufgespielt bekommen.

Doch, das 16F2.8 Fisheye ist dabei, das ist Gary Friedman nur in der Liste verrutscht, es steht beim 500/8R .

Pittisoft hat gerade noch einen wichtigen Punkt angesprochen, den ich nicht ausformuliert habe.

Alle die den LA-EA4 von mir umbauen lassen, bekommen natürlich die ausgebaute Platine mitgeschickt (in der Vepackung der neuen, im selben Paket mit dem umgebauten LA-EA4).

Mal eine Frage:
Wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe, dann kann man ein Update ja selber machen. Irgendwer hatte ja geschrieben, dass das per Software-Update geht über PC mit Adapter an der Kamera. Aber wo bekommen die Updates her?
